Vijayashanti joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1998 soon after which she was given the position of the BJP's Women's Wing secretary (Bharateeya Mahila Morcha). The first public meeting was held in 1998 at Nellore which was a big hit in support of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Vijaya Shanti was named Bharatiya Janata Party’s contestant from the Cuddapah Lok Sabha constituency during the 1999 general election against Sonia Gandhi of Congress party. Vijaya Shanti, however, withdrew from the race after Sonia Gandhi took the decision of contesting from Bellary. In 1996, the actor-turned-politician, who was Pro-BJP, was the star campaigner for then Chief Jayalalitha after she vowed her support to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Vijayashanti was the star campaigner for BJP Lok Sabha Polls along with Cricketer Srikkanth in Tamilnadu. In January 2009, Vijaya Shanti started Talli Telangana, her own political party which she merged into TRS party owing to lack of strength and support. Vijaya Shanti’s movie appearances decreased from 1999 as she startedto focus on her political career. Vijaya Shanti had stopped signing up for new movies by the year 2004. Vijaya Shanti won as a Member of Parliament from the Medak constituency in the 2009 general election from TRS party. Expressing solidarity with the resignation of Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao, Vijaya Shanti resigned from the post of secretary general of Telangana Rashtra Samithi in June 2009. Vijaya Shanti submitted her resignation as an MP in 2011 along with Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao in the agitation of the Telangana movement. The speaker of the house later rejected the resignation letter since they were not in the appropriate format. Later, Vijaya Shanti participated actively in politics for the bifurcation of the state, in which Vijaya Shanti had a prominent role to play in the process.
Owing to some differences in opinion with the party Supremo KCR in February 2014, Vijaya Shanti joined Indian National Congress party. Vijaya Shanti contested in the 2014 Assembly Elections from Medak Assembly constituency representing Indian National Congress party and lost as Member of Legislative Assembly. After losing, she stayed away from public life and limelight and remained inactive in politics. In 2018, Vijayashanti was appointed the star campaigner and adviser to the TPCC election campaign committee by the president of Congress Rahul Gandhi, who put in his faith in her as their crowd puller against Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao. It was pointed out by a few critics that the decision of choosing Vijaya Shanti, who remained inactive in politics for a few years would not be wise. There were also political experts who believed in her that her work as star campaigner would do considerable damage to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
